Guardian Farm Layouts
Guardian farms are constructed at or around Ocean Monuments to harvest Prismarine Shards, Prismarine Crystals, and raw cod. They are among the most resource-intensive farms to build due to the scale of water removal or mob funneling required, but they provide materials unobtainable from any other renewable source.
Overview
Guardians spawn exclusively within the bounding box of an Ocean Monument, which extends 58 blocks in each horizontal direction from the monument's center and from Y=39 down to the ocean floor. The two primary design philosophies are:
- Drain-based: Remove all water within and around the monument's bounding box using sponges or sand. Guardians spawn in water source blocks only, so the remaining water channels funnel them into a central kill point. Extremely labour-intensive but produces the highest rates.
- Funnel-based: Leave the ocean intact but install soul sand bubble columns or waterlogged trapdoor arrays to redirect spawned guardians downward into a kill chamber beneath the monument. Less work upfront but lower efficiency.
Kill Methods
Lava blades at the surface of a drop shaft are the standard for Java Edition. Bedrock players more commonly use magma block floors due to differences in entity physics near block boundaries. Both approaches work in all current versions.
